What causes Thanatos and Eros (Freudian theory)?

I've been doing a lot of research for a paper I've been writing, but haven't come across whether it's been determined why a person has a stronger death drive of life drive. Is it still undetermined? Note: I am NOT referring to the Greek gods, but rather a section of Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory.
